All three: folkstyle, freestyle and Greco-Roman. Folkstyle is the style used in Texas high school and college wrestling. Freestyle and Greco-Roman are the two Olympic styles.
Folkstyle rewards control, with points for takedowns, escapes, reversals and near falls, and it includes mat wrestling from the referee's position. Freestyle allows attacks on the legs and awards big points for exposure and throws. Greco-Roman allows holds above the waist only, so it builds hand fighting, body position and throws.
Folkstyle runs through the fall and winter, and the Texas USA Wrestling folkstyle state tournament is held in February. Freestyle and Greco-Roman run in the spring and summer, and the Texas USA Wrestling Freestyle and Greco State Championships follow in the spring. In 2026 that tournament was held in early May.
